Our methodology
We calculate rectangular project volume from user-entered dimensions. Cubic yards = length in feet × width in feet × depth in inches ÷ 324. The optional allowance multiplies this quantity by 1 + allowance percentage/100.
Weight and hauling
Estimated weight in US short tons equals cubic yards multiplied by user-entered density in tons per cubic yard. This conversion is approximate, and densities vary by product, moisture and compaction. The optional truck-trip estimate divides the material weight by the truck's entered legal payload and rounds up. Hauling capacity can also be restricted by volume, loading configuration and state requirements.
Concrete bags and mulch bags
Concrete bag estimates use an illustrative yield of 0.6 cubic feet per 80-pound bag; always consult the actual manufacturer's package. Mulch uses a standard 2-cubic-foot bag. Bag estimates round up.
Cost
Estimated material price equals the calculated bulk quantity times the price entered, plus a fixed delivery charge. No live supplier price feed is used. Labor, tax, permit fees and disposal are excluded unless incorporated into the entered fixed charge.
Important limitations
These calculators estimate simple rectangular shapes. For irregular areas, measure each rectangle separately and add their material estimates. Confirm required thickness after compaction with the product supplier or project designer. Estimates are not engineering advice, contractual quotes, or guarantees.
Project material lists
Our paver, raised-bed, sod, grass-seed and retaining-wall tools use the product dimensions, bag volumes and coverage rates you enter. Whole pieces and bags round up. Retaining-wall blocks round up by course and row before allowance. Price estimates use the displayed purchasing units, plus the entered fixed charge. The raised-bed tool compares bulk volume against whole bags; sod cost uses individual pieces while pallet count is informational. See each calculator for its full formula, example and exclusions.
