Gravel Calculator

Calculate gravel cubic yards, tons, driveway coverage and delivery loads.

Enter your project measurements

Material selection labels your estimate. It does not change density: enter your supplier’s US tons per cubic yard for the selected product. The 1.5 default is only a starting assumption.

How to use this gravel calculator

Estimate gravel for driveways, pathways, and bases using dimensions and supplier-specific tonnage. Measure the longest and widest sides in feet and the material depth in inches. The tool estimates cubic yards and converts to short tons using the density you enter. Apply an allowance for uneven ground, compaction, or spillage as appropriate to the material.

Important assumptions

Gravel needs vary with compaction, moisture and aggregate grading. Ask your supplier for its actual density; 1.5 US short tons per cubic yard is an editable planning assumption.

Formula used

Volume (cubic yards) = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324. Then multiply by (1 + your additional allowance as a decimal). Estimated US short tons = cubic yards × your density in US short tons per cubic yard.

For bulk material, enter price per yard or ton as labelled. The calculator adds any delivery fee entered, but does not automatically include tax, labor, permits or disposal.

Common project planning mistakes

  • Confusing cubic yards of volume with tons of weight.
  • Ordering by loose volume when your specifications refer to compacted depth.
  • Assuming one dump truck can legally transport every material at the same payload.
  • Using a national average price instead of requesting a local supplier quote.

Example gravel quantities

These examples use rectangular measurements with no extra allowance. The weight column uses an illustrative density; replace it with your supplier’s figure.

Common questions

How much gravel do I need for a driveway?

Measure the driveway length and width in feet and enter the intended depth in inches. Volume in cubic yards is length × width × depth ÷ 324, before any allowance. For irregular driveways, split the area into rectangles and add the estimates.

Can I use this for crushed stone or river rock?

Yes. Choose the material name, then enter the supplier’s density. Selecting a material labels the estimate; it does not automatically select a different density. Product size, moisture and void space affect the conversion to tons.

Is a cubic yard the same as a ton?

No. A cubic yard measures volume; a US short ton is 2,000 pounds of weight. Multiply yards by the supplier’s tons-per-yard factor. For example, 4 yards at an assumed 1.5 US tons per yard equals 6 US tons.
