Material Cost Calculator

Estimate total material cost, waste allowance, hauling and delivery for a project.

Enter your project measurements

Price, density and payload are assumptions you control. Confirm with your supplier.

How to use this material cost calculator

Build a quick material-only estimate with optional delivery charges. Measure the longest and widest sides in feet and the material depth in inches. The tool estimates cubic yards and converts to short tons using the density you enter. Apply an allowance for uneven ground, compaction, or spillage as appropriate to the material.

Important assumptions

The estimate covers input quantities and prices only, not labor, disposal, permits or taxes unless you include those in the delivery/other field.

Formula used

Volume (cubic yards) = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324. Then multiply by (1 + your additional allowance as a decimal). Estimated US short tons = cubic yards × your density in US short tons per cubic yard.

For bulk material, enter price per yard or ton as labelled. The calculator adds any delivery fee entered, but does not automatically include tax, labor, permits or disposal.

Common project planning mistakes

  • Confusing cubic yards of volume with tons of weight.
  • Ordering by loose volume when your specifications refer to compacted depth.
  • Assuming one dump truck can legally transport every material at the same payload.
  • Using a national average price instead of requesting a local supplier quote.

Disclaimer: These estimates are for planning only and do not replace engineering specifications or quotes.

Worked ordering example

A 20-cubic-yard order at an assumed 1.5 US tons per yard weighs 30 US tons. At 15 US tons per legal payload, that is 2 trips. At an illustrative $45 per ton plus $100 in total delivery charges, the material-and-delivery estimate is $1,450. These are example inputs, not current supplier prices.

Common questions

What unit does the material cost calculator use?

This general tool prices estimated US short tons. The quantity is project volume multiplied by your density, with allowance applied. Use the dedicated mulch or concrete tool when you have a price per cubic yard.

Does it use live supplier prices?

No. Enter a quote from your supplier. The starting price is an illustrative input. Results update automatically from your values and should not be treated as a live market price or binding quote.

How are delivery fees included?

Your entered fixed charge is added once. It is not automatically multiplied by truck trips. If your quote charges per load, add those charges together before entering them; include other fees only if you intend them in the estimate.
